Hay Wain 200 is a site-specific trail, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the completion of John Constable's most famous painting; The Hay Wain. Quotes from the artist mark a route between Dedham Grammar School, where Constable was educated, and Flatford Mill, setting for one of the world's best known landscapes, finished in 1821.
While the original painting currently resides at the National Gallery in London;
studies for The Hay Wain can be found at the V&A, The Met in New York
and the collection of Colchester + Ipswich Museums.
Constable's original windmill carving, replicated at the Flatford end of the trail, can also be found in the care of Colchester + Ipswich Museums - further information can be found here.
Inspired by features of Constable's life and work, the trail was in place from the 29th of March until the 30th April 2021.
